FEATURED PROFILE: AMBERLY HOWELL

I've never met Amberly. She wrote to me about correcting some errors she found in the Rockerchick Roster. I suggested she write new profiles. She did. Along the way, I found out she was 14. I couldn't help but ask for her story. Here it is, in her own words.

* * *

There is much to be said about rock n roll, especially by a long-time follower of it like myself. I was being pulled towards music such as Bob Segar and George Thorogood at a time when my classmates were still in their boy-band phase. Of course, being 8 or 9 at the time, I had a very, VERY, short lived liking for teeny boppers, though to this day I will  rarely admit it. I swear it lasted no longer then a month, after hearing 98 degrees I ran straight back to Black Sabbath!

Girls in my class would drool over pictures of Hanson while I was living out an obsession with Gene Simons --this is before I saw KISS without their make-up! I don't even think I knew their names at the time. My musical tastes expanding as the years went on, I had my first taste of chick-rock with Cyndi Lauper (yes, Cyndi Lauper).  Not being too much of a fan at first, I stuck with the guys...Until a fateful day when her ripping vocals, and bad ass guitar riffs rang like a call from the gods -- I had gotten my very first Joan Jett CD, “I love Rock n Roll.”

I listened to her night and day before I  discovered, *shock, gasp,* THERE WAS MORE!

What was not to love about Joan? Her stunning beauty, her melodic riffs, her hard-core vocals (by the way it was a sad, sad day when I found I couldn‘t imitate her “OWW.“) I was in love!

By 7th grade, I had bought a guitar, dyed my hair black, got the step cut, and caked on the eye liner, spikes, and leather!  Living on a strict diet of Joan Jett, and the Runaways, I thought it couldn't get any better, but indeed it did. I set out hunting for more chick rockers and was successful, finding Vixen, the Adverts, Suzi Quatro, and a new idol in Wendy O. Williams.

(Now don't get me wrong Joan's always going to be #1, but Wendy was everything my mother hated and stood against, and everything I wanted to be!)

I hunted down a few CD's, learned to play some songs, even went to my dad's shop a few times to swing around a sledge hammer and a chainsaw (It was fun!!). I wanted the Mohawk but I was afraid to do it myself.  These girls influenced me beyond belief!

I got into later chick rock as well, like Bikini Kill, Babes in Toyland, L7, etc. Of course, I felt alone in my taste. I went to a very small school where the only people who thought they were punk rock were merely Green Day fanatics.

Before I was a Joan Clone, I had long brownish hair with no bangs or anything and, *shudders,* I'd have to admit to liking Nsync in my one month teeny bopper faze, but I'll admit I shared a slight resemblance to Avril Lavigne. Once I found out about her existence, that had to stop. My Joan-like appearance made me more of a freak of nature. I was surrounded by Ashlee Simpson wanna-be's and, as her fan base grew in my school, and the bitch decided to dye her hair black, I was accused of being a fan of hers as well.

04.06 * SPRING *
I never cared what people think of me (at least not them anyway) but people trying to force her music down my throat pissed me off. Being a victim of modern day stereo-typing, I was goth, emo, Slipknot fan...I began getting violent as the lables progressed, and it never stopped there. My idolizing girls, and refusing to reveal a crush, let alone write his OR HER name all over my arms and note book, meant I was called a lesbian. Oh, isn't junior high fun? But I never needed friends anyway when I had music!

I worked on getting a band together forever, but nothing ever worked out, I refused to work with anyone who didn't know or like Joan and Wendy (you may call it stubborn, but I call it having principles!).  Anyway, I finally got a chance with a project called “Rock Band 101,” a band that played a Joan Jett cover, as well as many others.

There's a place in a nearby town called the Osborne School of Music where two teachers there were putting together a band for a short time. The other kids was pretty cool, Lindsay was the front man (or front person for those of you who insist on being politically correct!). She digs classic rock as well, though she was a follower of Pat Benatar...but no matter, since she liked Joan as well! (Of course we couldn't escape having a Green Day and Fall Out Boy fan in our band.)

I signed up for the project, deciding to swallow my pride for 6 weeks and deal with the musical differences. It was hard enough finding a rock band in Texas, so I figured I'd live! We were to practice for 6 weeks, then, at the end of the 6 weeks, play a gig at a club called the Oasis. I played guitar and back-up vocals. It was required that we write one original song for the band, known as
"Acid Ego," and I wrote it...

The gig some how got to the local news paper and, even after reading the article, hardly anyone believed it was true, not that it mattered. All I had to do to get over it was, of course, going back home to crank up Maggots: the Record (My favorite non- album) as loud as it would go and, as always, I forgot about everything, growing more inspired by the moment!

It was a really small town, and our one gig went really
well. Everyone asked for an encore. It was fun! (Despite the fact I forgot the words on the original song that I wrote.)

Unfortunately, the band didn't last. Some guys realized how difficult it was to stay in a band. A friend and I tried to make a AC/DC cover band (AC/DSHE), only then we discovered the name was already taken, and it only lasted one day (she couldn't play anything or sing, anyway) -- but that's WAY aside the point.

They do this "Rock Band 101" thing a few times a year, so hopefully they'll throw another one together soon. I don't know if anyone else will sign up for it again, maybe at least Dylan (drummer) and Lindsey (vocalist/guitarist) at least will do it again. I'm even going to start taking up guitar lessons with one of the guys that put it together this Thursday...

I need some serious “Bad Reputation” and “Queens of Noise” if I'm really in a funk. “Midnight Music, “Heart beat” and “Victim of Circumstance” were a few other favorites of mine that got me through the school years.

Anyway, now at 14 years old I still shut myself up in my room, day-dreaming of jamming with Joan Jett one day, going out with a bang after a long lived life of sex, drugs, and rock n roll to meet Wendy O. To this day, I'll write my angry lyrics, shred my guitar, and keep my full on rock n roll life style until that dream comes true! I feel like owe my life to these chicks, man! I wouldn't of made it through junior high if it wasn't for their music!
